From Tracy: A must-read to truly understand the evolution of motherhood and shared care through the lens of our unique childhood. Of course the book goes beyond to argue that this unique need of humans to rely on others has also led to our unique capacity to understand others. Truly eye-opening. -
From Tracy: There is reason for controversy over some of the ideas here, but like all things academic, that is the sign of a good book. Written years ago, but a great look at the debate over nature versus nurture. -
From Tracy: Dr. Bloom is excellent at translating psychological research on children for the masses and in this installment he looks at how we view morality. It is fascinating as long as you remember that even our psychological research can be steeped in culture. -
From Tracy: One of the first child-oriented books I read (before kids, before EP) and I still love it. Dr. Gopnik will help you look at children’s behaviours in an entirely new light. -
From Tracy: The Bible of natural birth by the woman who helped keep these practices alive and has shown the world exactly how competent women are when properly supported. -
From Tracy: Another one of Ina May’s bibles on homebirth. If you are at all thinking of a home birth, please give this one a read. -
From Tracy: Not really for those who are looking for ‘how to’ books, but rather a very critical and unflinching look at the maternity care system in the USA (and elsewhere). It can be a painful read and one that may make you angry, but it is worth it as it can help expectant moms know what they may face and how to prepare. -
From Tracy: A wonderful collection of birth stories from California midwife Peggy Vincent. Sometimes we just need to read about the potential of the power and beauty of birth to appreciate all that it entails. -
From Tracy: The best look at co-sleeping and bedsharing for families there is, with all you need to know to do this safely. -
From Tracy: I wrote the forward for this book and stand by it years later; Sarah has written a wonderful guide for parents of all ages to start with when concerned about sleep. -
From Tracy: Pinky helps us normalize night waking, night feedings, and the like all while providing simple ways to help you maximize the sleep you can get. -
From Tracy: For the breastfeeding moms, this is more of a memoir than “how-to”, but a wonderful read and one that will help many families feel more secure in their own breastfeeding journey, especially as it pertains to sleep. -

From Tracy: One of my favourites because although it doesn’t cover how to’s like some of these books, it is an unflinching, honest account of the many struggles families face when breastfeeding in a culture that is neither supportive nor understanding. A must-read for anyone interested in supporting breastfeeding families.
